Irans Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh
Irans Foreign Ministry vehemently rejects Saudi Arabias allegations that the Islamic Republic maintains a military presence in Yemen, saying such allegations are aimed at deflecting attention away from the crimes committed by the Riyadh-led aggression coalition.
The ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh made the remarks on Wednesday after the Saudi-led coalition that has been invading Yemen since 2015 alleged it had struck "legitimate military" targets in the Yemeni capital Sanaa, including a "secret site" belonging to Irans Islamic Revolution Guards Corps.
The spokesman denied existence of any military ties between Iran and Yemen, asserting, "The Islamic Republic has never maintained a military presence in Yemen that could be targeted by the invaders."
He called the allegations "baseless" claims that were meant to divert the public opinion across the region and elsewhere in the world from "the invading countries atrocities."
Such allegations, he added, do not serve to change the fact that the invading countries have made a "strategic mistake" in taking on the Arab worlds already most impoverished nation.
The raid is one of the several that the Saudi-led coalition has carried out against the densely-populated Yemeni capital this month.
The coalition launched the war in March 2015 to restore power in Yemen to Riyadhs former favorite officials. It has stopped way short of the goal, while killing tens of thousands of Yemenis and turning the entire country into the scene of the worlds worst humanitarian crisis.
Yemens defense forces that comprise the countrys army and Popular Committees have been returning the aggression with counterstrikes targeting Riyadh-led militants inside Yemen and Saudi targets across the border.
The forces have vowed not to lay down their arms until the countrys complete liberation from the Saudi-led invasion and a simultaneous siege that the aggressors have imposed on their country.
